Museum
The building that houses the museum was restored under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture and since August of 1998 it began to operate with an exhibition of copies of works by El Greco.
Tradition says that in this house the great painter El Greco 1541 - 1614 was born.
It is said that he was born 25 km northwest of Chandakas (Heraklion), next to a Byzantine church. This area is called Theotokiana and is one of the first settlements of Fodele.
The restoration began in 1982 and lasted five years.
The house was found with serious damage because of the time and it was rebuilt exactly as the original design was. Inside, there are photos of the coming of the professors of the Valiadolid University of Spain on July 27, 1934, where they wanted to pay a tribute to our great painter El Greco and to his native town of Fodele.

El Greco, the Cretan, the Greek
El Greco, the Cretan, the Greek, the top painter. He is the General and the grandfather of Kazantzakis. And just the name "Greek" that was given to him, is enough to give us a great honour.
The Master hagiographer that since his young age was already famous in Candakas in the second half of the 16th century, he left his homeland, like so many others, for a universal path. But the first element in his art comes from the Byzantine art, as Chandakas was then the world centre of this art.
A restless spirit, as an authentic Cretan, he opened his wings to Venice of Italy, the metropolis of culture, literature and art in Europe. There he met one of the greatest painters of the time, Titsiano, and incorporated in his painting worldview, as the second basic element, the light (the "Lightning") and the colour.
He ended up to Spain, where his life had an enormous climax. Here, he pitted against the Holy Inquisition. The showdown was between good and evil, moral and immoral, freedom and intolerance, faith and fanaticism. It was the eternal struggle between Light and Darkness.
Greco had all of these in his paintings, the Light and the values of the insubordinate civilization which gave birth to him.
According to tradition, when the painter was in Crete and he painted saints, he signed his works with the name Cris.

His original work "The Baptism" is at the Historical Museum of Crete, after its purchase by the city of Heraklion with the assistance of many residents with a significant amount, allowing to visitors of the museum to admire one of the finest works of the great painter.

Un uomo di 36 anni con gli occhi pieni di passione, arrivando in una città circondata dalle mura ma fiera e isolata dalle profonde trincee del Tago con le nude rive e le rocce luccinanti, è rimasto senza parole. Il paesaggio era pieno di olivi, i timi profumavano e la ‘città regia’ appariva tutta rossa sotto l’ infiammato cielo.
‘Come, ma come assomiglia a Fodele, la mia patria!’, ha pensato.
Così, ha deciso, come se fosse una seconda patria, di amarla e di renderla rinomata.
Quello uomo di 36 anni era Dominicos Theotokopoulos.
È nato a Fodele, un piccolo luogo con molte arancie.
Come si dice, l’ origine della sua famiglia era da Bisanzio. Anche se è passato prima da Corfù la sua destinazione finale era Creta.
A Fodele è rimasto fino all’ età di 20 studiando le prime lettere dai fratti di Santo Panteleimona.
Secondo gli storici, Dominicos Theotokopoulos ha continuato i suoi studi presso la famosa scuola accanto al monastero di Santa Caterina.
È propabile che lui abbia lavorato, per un certo tempo, con Michele Damaskino, il capo della Scuola Cretese (scuola Post-Bizantina), prima di partire per l’ Italia, polo d’ attrazione per molti artisti di quella epoca.
Lui e suo fratello Manuso sono partiti dal porto di Handaka (a Iraklion) e sono arrivati a Venezia. Creta, in quello periodo, era sotto la dominazione veneziana. Molti greci, specialmente cretesi (abitanti di Creta), sono andati tutti insieme a Venezia, nella zona di Rialto. La chiesa di San Giorgio era diventato il loro centro spirituale. L’ arte locale e le tendenze artistiche dell’epoca hanno creato la famosa SCUOLA BIZANTINA MIGRIORATA che ha ispirato il pittore all’ inizio della sua carriera.
A Venezia il pittore ha ricominciato a studiare ma con maestri meravigliosi cioè Tiziano, Tintoretto, Bassano, come afferma lui stesso, però copiandoli con molta facilità.
Piano piano il greco di Fodele di Creta comincia a stupire ‘suscitando grande sorpresa ai tutti i grandi pittori di Roma con il suo incredibile talento personale’, scrive l’illuste artista Giulio Clovio, lui che ha presentato il pittore al Cardinale di Fornese. Venti cinque opere d’arte, e ancora di più, di quello periodo sono ritenute le proprie, per esempio il dipinto ‘L’ adorazione dei magi’ al Museo Benaki ad Atene, ed anche il trittico presso la Pinacoteca di Modena. Si tratta del suo tema preferito.
Per questo motivo l’ha realizzato di nuovo. Quella seconda opera d’ arte si trova oggi a Budapest.
Molto caratteristico è il ritratto del suo amico Giulio Clovio che oggi si trova al Museo di Napoli.
In questo punto finisce il periodo della ‘primavera’ dell’ artista che non è ancora la El Greco ma il pittore molto bravo, il studente meritevole di Tiziano e di Tintoretto, di cui la tecnica è influenzata dal Rinascimento italiano ed anche dall’ Arte Bizantina...
