Tourist Guide of Astipalea

Anhydrous landscape with shrubs, white houses and picturesque churches in every corner. You will encounter many small hugs and coves for swimming and beautiful beaches. Astypalea or Hora is the capital and the port of the island. Goes into the sea, is built on a hill, forming two bays: the port of Pera Gialos and Livadia bay.

You will find many well-preserved windmills and is worth visiting the Heroes monument, the traditional houses, the traditional cafe, the quaint churches and the monasteries in Panormos bay and the castle of St. John. The beach of Pera Gialos and the beaches of Livadia, Tzanaki, Moura, Papou, Agios Konstantinos, Vatses, Kaminakia, Agios Ioannis, Panormos, Pahia Ammos, Second and Third Marmari are suitable for swimming and for water sports.

The biggest festival of the island takes place in mid-August to the Virgin Mary Portaetissa. In the seaside village of Analipsi, there are excursion boats that take you to beaches and to islands Hondro, Ligno, Agia Kiriaki, Koutsomiti, Kounoupi and Sirna. The Vathi is more like a lagoon and you can approach it and by a tour boat. There, very impressive is the cave of Drakos (dragon) with impressive stalactites and stalagmites.

The greenest village of the island is the coastal settlement of Livadia, from where you can easily reach the bays Vatses and Kaminakia with the beautiful beaches and the crystal waters. Also, impressive is the cave of Negros at the bay of Vatses which the tradition connects it with the pirates and their treasures. If you visit Astypalea is worth buying the local cheese called "Clori" which is a cheese in a "purse" and in a basket and trying the lentils with grated dough and vinegar, the lobster pasta and the goat stuffed with rice and spices.
