Stoupa, an inspiration

Stoupa in Messinia
Stoupa is a coastal village of Mani, 45 km southeast of Kalamata.

Stoupa is of great historical significance for Peloponnese. The castle dominates on the east side of the village, the citadel of the old town of Lefktros, where the temple of the goddess Athena was built according to Pausanias.
During the Frankish era, the castle was rebuilt and renamed to Beaufort.

In recent years, Stoupa has been a source of inspiration. Nikos Kazantzakis and Zorbas lived there, from whom Kazantzakis was first inspired and wrote the play "Life and Times of Alexis Zorbas".

Two are its most prevalent names:
a) from the Arvanite word Stoupa, which means Beach or Coast and
b) from Stoupia (lint), the fibers of flax, and the harvest, which was the main occupation of local residents.

Nowadays, there has been a rapid growth in the region and not only during the summer. It is perhaps the most developed tourist village of the municipality where it belongs and also of Messinia.

The village is characterized by its clear waters. It has two beaches. The first is the homonym beach, the beach of Stoupa and the second is the famous beach of Kalogria. In whichever you decide to go, you can be equipped with a water-mask to explore the beauty of the seabed.

Besides the beautiful sea, you can enjoy the glorious sunset, which is amazing from all places of the region.

Kalogria BeachWhichever time of year you choose to go, enjoy your walk in the streets of the area. An ideal route is that among the Gorges of Viros, Noupantis and Koskargas, because you have the opportunity to explore the surrounding caves.
Besides that, trips take place to the Cave of Diros, to Olympia, Monemvasia and Mistras.
