Flavours of Rhodes

The visit to Rhodes is a pleasant surprise!
It is an island that allocates natural beauty and travels the sightseer in others times. In addition to the charms of the island, you can experience the traditional cuisine, an acquisition of the cultural heritage for the local people who maintain and enrich this tradition over the years!

The difficult years that Rhodes left behind, did not affect its gastronomy, it left it unchanged, even from the invasion of different cultures with different tradition. Its base is mainly the wheat and the olive and a main advantage of the island is the fertile territory that allows the cultivation in contrast to other islands which are based solely on fishing.

If we do a flashback in the past, we see that the food comes from the mother land, such as the bread, olives, cereals, legumes, vegetables, grape and many others too. There are also foods of animal origin such as eggs, dairy, poultry and meat. Finally, are the fish products. All these, with the skill and artistry of the Rodian housewives, became the whole philosophy of gastronomy of Rhodes.

The use of the natural materials and their maintenance, with traditional methods, have created some simple and nutritious meals. From wheat becomes the oatmeal which is very popular on the island and is preferred in their recipes.

It is also the pasta which they make it themselves, such as wheat, pasta, noodles and all sorts of pastries, and the rich green soil that is offering generously capers, herbs, blites, vine leaves, pumpkin, onions, beans and much more.

The meat is cooked with skill and it comes from animals of free grazing and it is often accompanied by various spices and herbs! The fishes, that their taste is one of the first taste experience of the people, people of Rhodes found a way to conserve them in the marinating sauce.

Finally, the sweets are superb, with a base made mainly of cereals, olive oil, honey, fruits, herbs and milk, which are the main food in events, weddings, baptisms, festivals and customs.

The island is particular famous for its wine. The art of winemaking has been known since antiquity. The sunshine and the vine cultivation contributed to the production of abundant sweet wine! Famous wines produced on the island are the White Moschato, the Athiri and the Mantilaria.

Rhodes, generally, belongs to the islands with rich production and this contributes considerably to the tourism growth of the island and to its development. The hotels and the restaurants buy fresh ingredients and offer to visitors unprecedented flavors!

We have singled out some traditional dishes which you should taste, such as: balls with bulgur, small pies with chickpeas, marinated fish, red fishes with bulgur, Lacani (beef), red pumpkin in the oven, stuffed Easter lamb, hen with turkish delight (chicken with noodles), stuffed cabbage with bulgur, calf without sash and Melekouni which is a traditional cake for weddings.
