Arachova



Picturesque, famous and cosmopolitan, Arachova attracts thousands of people every year. The many options the visitors have there in conjunction with the wonderful places, classify the Arachova as the top preference for winter holidays. It is built on the highest populated region of Parnassos mountain, at an altitude of 900-1000 m, and the distance from Athens is 160 km.

One of these customs is the "Panigiraki", as it is called, and is done in honor of St. George on the eve of his feast. The church of Saint George - majestic at the top of Arachova - has been historically associated with the Battle of Arachova in 1826 and the victory of the Greeks against the Turks.
In this traditional ceremony is done the procession of the image of Saint George and then follows a big celebration with traditional dances, songs and foods. This great festival dates back to the Byzantine era and of the years of Ottoman occupation and from then keeps intact its traditional character.
Many traditions state that St. George played an important role in the freedom of Arachova during the period of the Turkish occupation, so, at the start of the Battle, the residents raised their own flag where the Saint was depicted.

The traditional cheese of Arachova is the Formaella, that is produced exclusively in Arachova and for its clotting they put it in small baskets. Livestock farming is highly developed and the meat, cooked with recipe of Arachova, is very tasty. Famous are the intestines, the meat patties and many other traditional dishes. After you taste the local cuisine, do not miss to taste the wonderful cakes like pancakes, fresh quince, mygdalato, karydato and the many jams.
On the shelves and in the windows of the shops, you will see products of folk art and textiles, made from people of Arachova, like the famous karpitia and many other kinds of needlework as the stitch of Arachova, the gold embroidery and many other masterpieces.
