Zagorochoria

Zagorochoria vilages are located in the prefecture of Ioannina between Metsovo and Konitsa and are divided into East, West and Central Zagori.
This is an area of unlimited range of natural beauty surrounded by mountains and it consists of 46 villages.
Immersed in pines and firs, with many streams and rivers with scattered stone bridges, the famous Zagorochoria are one of the most interesting destinations and are always ready to guide you to their exciting paths.
The flora and fauna of the region are very rich and is the home of many rare species. In Zagori, find shelter deers, bears, jackals, etc.

Apart from the images of infinite beauty that you will see, Zagori is perfect for your entertainment.
Meet inch by inch the tall mountains via a fascinating climbing, discover the magic of the river through a fun ride with kayak or rafting, tour to the National Park of Vikos and Aoos, admire the Pindos National Park (Valia Calda) and enjoy nature in its glory.



The area offers organized mountain refuges, center for rafting and canoeing - kayaking, hang gliding track and in the village of Aspraggeli shooting competitions take place with great interest.

The grand canyon of Vikos is a truly beautiful location. It is considered one of the deepest canyons in the world and has a width that starts from 30 and reaches 100 meters. The depth is over 900 meters and the vegetation is very dense.
There you will find a wide variety of willows, trees, herbs, flowers and much more natural wealth.

The Gorge of Vikos is in the Guinness book as the canyon with the smallest opening. It is a sight that will evoke awe and admiration. If you love hiking, you can cross the canyon and end up at the source of the Voidomatis river.
The stone bridge of Voidomatis that stands imposing, with the river to cross harmoniously the ravine of Vikos, is of particular beauty. The rivers of Aoos and of Voidomatis host many species of fish and rare birds and insects.
Browse and discover the beauty and have fun by rafting or kayaking in the crystal clear waters.

Of unique beauty is also the stone bridge of Kaber Aga in East Zagori over Zagoritikos river, the Kalogerikos or Plakidas bridge in the area of the Kipi, the bridge of Noutsos at Voidomatis river, where is located the cave in which the brigand Davelis had been hidden, the remarkable bridge of Konitsa in the exit of the river Aoos, which built in 1870 and is considered as one of the biggest bridges in Greece. Generally you will find many stone arched bridges and each one "carries" its own history, others are small and others larger, others more narrowly and others wide, but all with their own unique beauty.
The Drakolimni lake, an excellent wetland, hosts hundreds of rare species as the Alpine newt. The area of the lake is approximately 5 acres and is surrounded by the mountains of Astrakas and Gamila. To go to Drakolimni you should start from Papigo and from there follow the marked trail.

Apart from the magnificent wetlands, the stone bridges and the hundreds of beauties that you will discover in the region, there are numerous scattered monasteries with historical importance. Some of the most famous is that of Virgin Mary Spilaiotissa.
It is dedicated to the Assumption and is built into a rock with the Voidomatis river to flow beneath it. Once, it was a major monastery in the area of Zagoria. It is said that this monastery was a refuge by the inhabitants during the Turkish occupation.
It is located between the villages of Aristi and Papigo and is 48 km from Ioannina.
Another monastery with a "martyr" past is the Voutsas monastery, which was destroyed by the Turks in the 15th century and it was rebuilt in 1943 but it was burned by the Germans. Inside, you'll see wall paintings dating from 1680. The monastery is located in East Zagori in Greveniti village and is dedicated to Virgin Mary.

Four of the villages, the big Papigo, Small Papigo, Monodentri and Vikos, representative samples of the particular local architecture, are included to the National Park of Vikos - Aoos. Around them and very close to the boundaries of the park, there are six other villages of Zagoria: Aristi, St. Minas, Vitsa, Kapesovo, Vradeto and Vrisochori as well Konitsa town and the villages of Kallithea and Klidonia.

In the traditional village of Monodendri you will find the monastery of Agia Paraskevi. The location is amazing and is built on the rim of the gorge of Vikos and its interior is adorned with frescoes of the 15th century.

In West Zagori, you will admire the famous Papigo village, built at the foot of Astrakas, at an altitude of 2.436m. The village consists of two settlements, the Small and Big Papigo, both beautiful and picturesque.
Also, another famous village of West Zagori is the Aristi village, just beautiful with immutable characteristics.


In East Village Zagori, the Vovousa village adorns the area of Pindos with the Aoos River that crosses it and the tranquility of the nature in the first place. Visit also Flabourari village, which is situated at an altitude of 1000m. at the slope of Tsouka Rosa and Doliani, one of the most beautiful villages of East Zagoria with extremely lush vegetation.

At the central Zagori, besides the famous gorge of Vikos, there are dozens of beautiful places and villages that are worth visiting.
The picturesque Monodendri, the Tsepelovo with the imposing mansions and the historic churches, the Kapesovo equally beautiful and scenic with a rich history, Vrisohori, which is surrounded by coniferous forests and clear running waters, the Elati with stunning views, which is located on Mitsikeli Mount and of course the beautiful and famous Dikorfo, built in a 1000 altitude. Dikorfo consists of elegant stone houses, cobbled streets and is one of the best preserved and picturesque villages in Zagoria.
Do not forget to visit the traditional settlement of Vitsa with all the features that describe a highly impressive village.
