Tsipouradika of Volos and Nea Ionia

The "tsipouradika" have a history that starts from the beginnings of the previous century.

From earlier times, when everything was more pure and authentic, when all the habitants of the region where the members of a big company, tsipouradika where the meeting point to spend their beautiful but many times filled with grief lives.

At the port as well as at the neighbors of the city, where the meeting place of the locals was, it continues now to be the necessary place that the today's visitor will visit. The live tradition of the area that used to be a small ceremony has turned in our days to an institution and has been especially loved by the friend visitors. Whoever comes to Volos and meets at close quarters the unique atmosphere of tsipouradika is sure that will come again and again.

The whole habit started from the refugees of Asia Minor that had settled down in Volos and especially from those who worked in the harbor. After finishing their jobs in noon, they were collected at the time at the coffee houses of the port to drink their tsipouro, which at the most cases was accompanied by appetizers in small plates, a habit that continues until today.

By the years, the habit of the noon meeting at the tsipouradika of the port with the sea appetizers became a way of living for the workers of Volos, as well. Slowly, the companies were becoming bigger and bigger, the appetizers richer and more sophisticated, but the whole process always kept its authenticity. The tsipouradika of the area were established and became by the years the meeting place of the habitants of Volos, not only at noon.

The fame of the tsipouradika was spread at the wider area, later at the whole Greece and it didn't take long to be known even abroad. All the visitors of Volos (Greek and foreign tourists) will come by to meet at close quarters the famous tsipouradika, while most of them will become their fanatic frequenters.

The secret of their success is hidden in the authenticity of the offered appetizers, at their endless variety (with every new order the appetizers are different and for sure when you leave you won't have tasted all of them) and at the pure tsipouro. Taste has the first role, but if you try to learn the recipes you will probably get no answer, as the secrets of their cooking are discovered only to those that wish to continue the tradition.
