Ierapetra


Ierapetra is located on the southeastern coast of Crete, in the prefecture of Lasithi, and is the southernmost city not only of Greece but of whole Europe.

Ierapetra is the fourth largest city of Crete and there is the main commercial center of the Prefecture for the exportations of agricultural products to Europe.
Its distance from the region of Agios Nikolaos is 36 km, from Heraklion is 100 km and 242 km from Chania.
East of Ierapetra and 25 km away is the summer tourist destination, Makris Yialos.

In the area is clear the presence of a rich ecosystem. Some of the most important are the Golden Island, the largest and most important forest of Crete: the forest of Selakano and the mountains of Thripti.

Apart from the natural wealth, emphasis is given on the cultural development of the region. In 2003, it was created the Department of Marketing and Advertising of School of Business of Economics of TEI, which was the first department of higher education in the town of Ierapetra.

Apart from these activities, Ierapetra is ideal for day trips so you will have the opportunity to visit the picturesque villages of the wide area and to taste the traditional products.

Access ways
There are several ways to access to Ierapetra. Among them, the coastal access is not included, as there is no port in Ierapetra to serves such purposes.

From Heraklion
Starting from Heraklion, visitors can use car or the local buses.
Towards Agios Nikolaos, without entering the town, turn right and get the southerly direction towards Ierapetra.
It must be noted that the road is very good without any difficulty.

An alternative route is the one which starts from Heraklion, stops in Upper Vianno and Myrtos and finally to Ierapetra.
Although the route is longer, is more scenic and breathtaking as many villages make their appearance in the prefecture of Iraklion and Lasithi.

From Chania
The route Chania - Ierapetra is 240 km and lasts 3.5 hours.

From Rethymno
Starting from Rethymno you will need 2.5 to 3 hours, as the mileage distance is slightly shorter than that of Chania.

In conclusion, Ierapetra is the ideal holiday destination for families as it offers many amenities and options, for couples who want beautiful beaches and daily trips and for those are looking for a bustling tourist resort with lively nightlife.
