Sitia


Sitia is on the eastern side of Crete. It is a town of Lasithi County and is amphitheatrical built in the gulf, in the place of the ancient one. It is the birthplace of the poet Vintsentzos Kornaros, the author of "Erotokritos".

Although it is described as a modern city with a strong tourist appeal, it has retained many of its traditional elements.
With plenty of attractions, still keeps alive the memory of the events, not only in the residents' memory but also in those who visit it.

Archaeological Museum
It is divided into five sections based on periods, and includes artifacts from the region of Sitia, which are dated back to 3,500 BC.
Among the exhibits, worth of admiration are the clay tablets in Linear A that were found in Zakros, the large collection of pottery and figurines.

Kazarma (Casa di Arma)
The despotic Kazarma fortress was built in 13th century by the Venetians and is visible even from the beach. Actually, its name is Casa di Arma (barracks of the garrison) and it was the main castle for defence of the town.

It was suffered by many disasters as a result of the raids by pirates, robbers and also by earthquakes.
There had been numerous attempts to obtain its original power and prestige, however without any success.

The fort was declared as a historical monument and with specific days and hours of visit. Those who decide to visit it, will be impressed by the panoramic view of the town of Sitia.

The Kazarma is a serene and majestic place that reveals its historical significance and its rich past.

During the summer, cultural events take place in a specially designed space. Concerts, events, theatrical performances, lectures, etc. are some of the events that are taking place within the festival of "Kornaria".

Folklore Museum
Exhibits as embroidery, weaving, etc. which are dating from the 19th century and early 20th, cause impression on visitors.
This way, the effort of the cultural association "Vitsentzos Kornaros" is acknowledged, which, on its own initiative, has organized the Folklore Museum.

Showroom of local products
The Union of Agricultural Cooperatives of Sitia has created a showroom of local products in order to strengthen the local production and the economic growth.

Access
By car
There are two access roads to Sitia. The first starts from Ierapetra and the second one starts from Agios Nikolaos. Using the bus (KTEL) Lasithi - Heraklion, you can navigate to other cities and prefectures of Crete.

By Boat
Sitia has a port that serves mostly small fishing boats. However, there is a connection for passenger ships from Piraeus, the Cyclades and the Dodecanese.

By air
Airport of Sitia is able to accommodate flights to and from Athens, Rhodes, Karpathos, Kassos, Aktion, Heraklion. In addition, charter flights and private aircrafts can also be accommodated.
